more rules for making it to hollywood on american idol...

rule #11 - any allusion to any type of animal behavior should be kept out of your audition.

rule #12 - under MOST circumstances - you should listen to your mother. if she tells you that you aren't right for american idol - she may be right. she only has your best interest in mind and she doesn't want to see you humiliated and hurt.

rule #13 - don't make out with the other contestants.

rule #14 - paula and randy's ultimate voice coach set is currently being tested on fox 2's deal or dud. somehow - i have a feeling it won't be as successful as the vidalia chop wizard...

rule #15 - if you sang with someone famous - make sure they know it. it obviously helps...

we have to believe we are magic...

it's no secret that there are certain aspects of domesticity that i really don't care for and hate doing with the fire of a million suns and then some.

one of these is laundry. especially folding and sorting. and especially whites.

it's because of my hatred of this chore that more often than not - all of our socks and underwear end up in a magic basket on our laundry room floor and every day we have to rifle through it looking for the aforementioned garments.

this basket is totally magic. because if i'm looking for socks for nina - all i can find are socks for me or jeff. if i'm looking for socks for me - all i can find are socks for nina and jeff. same with the underwear. and jeff can never find his own socks either which i find totally amazing since all i can ever find are his socks. or nina's socks.

i'm not sure how we obtained this magic basket - but i' d really wish it would stop playing tricks on me. it's just not cool...

why can't we have a magic cookie jar instead?

more rules for making it to the hollywood round on american idol...

rule #6 - don't come into the audition admitting that you can't sing and are totally tone deaf and then get mad when they tell you no. it's a singing competition - not an anti-singing competition - what did you REALLY expect them to say??

rule #7 - just because jennifer hudson won a golden globe and is nominated for an oscar doesn't mean that you should turn your audition for american idol into an audition for passions after the judges have told you no.

rule #8 - lose the brooklyn/jersy/coney island accent while singing. as my drama teacher in high school always said - annunciation is key. you shouldn't be able to hear that accent when you sing. and hit those t's! tuh tuh tuh tuh tuh!

rule #8 1/2 - if one show based on talent said no - the others probably will too. especially when the producers are the same...

rule #8 3/4 - and fur isn't cool any more pal...

rule #9 - no one wants to see you have an orgasm.

rule #10 - be confident - but not full of yourself. just sing it.

rule for life...

if you are going to begin a sentence with the words "okay - i'll be the bad guy..." rethink what you are about to say and consider NOT saying it...

Wednesday, January 17, 2007

rules for making it to hollywood on american idol...

rule #1 - don't totally destroy a song in front of the person who originally wrote and recorded it.

rule #2 - don't go into your auditions trying to sound exactly like a previous finalist - especially one who didn't win. if they didn't win - you won't win.

rule #3 - don't try to pull off a sound if you don't have a look to match it. clay aikin can't sound like chris daughtry. and the three tenors can't look like flavor flave. it just doesn't work.

rule #4 - don't insert the names of the judges into the song you are singing for your audition - it makes you appear to be desperate.

rule #5 - if you need a gimic (juggling, t-shirt with cooky message to get you noticed, costume, amish garb) to get you to the big prs (paula, randy, simon) round - then you probably don't belong in hollywood. your voice should be all you need.

to be continued...

book review - following foo

as of last night i finished reading following foo. i have a list 3 people long right now of those who want to read it next.

over all - it was a really good book. see, bd wong, an actor who you may know best from oz, law and order svu, or the father of the bride movies, is a gay man. he was in a committed relationship for many years when their biological clocks started ticking and they decided that all the talk over the years about some day having a family wasn't going to happen on it's own. so they set out to figure out who to go about becoming dads.

they found an organization that helps same sex couples - usually men - become dads. using richie's sisters eggs and bd's "forensic evidence" (as he referred to it when i heard him speak), and a surrogate mother - their journey began. to their joy they found they were expecting - not only one baby - but identical twins!

everything was going swimmingly until the babies started showing signs of distress and the surrogate gave birth three months early. turns out that the babies had some sort of condition that happens with twins where one of them kinda transfused most of his blood to the other so that the other would stand a better chance of survival. this is far better explained in the book by the way.

the first twin didn't make it. but the second twin was a fighter.

following the birth of the boys, bd wong started emailing family and friends to update them on the situation and the ups and downs and highs and lows that occure in the rollar coaster of a life that is lived inside the nicu. over the three months that little jackson foo wong was laying in the hospital nicu in san fransico, his father wrote. and what he wrote got forwarded and forwarded and forwarded. till tons of people he didn't know where silently cheering on his little boy. and tons of people were shooting back messages of encouragement. and through all of this writing and updating and using his words to deal with his situation - the basis for a book was formed.

i was wanted to read this book after hearing bd wong speak a couple months back. it sounded interesting. nina was premature and lived in nicu for a week. so i could relate in a way. i'm a bd wong fan - so that was another insentive. but it really gave me an insight into this man's life during this time. i mean - you think about actors living the glory life and relaxing the days away not really worrying about anything but their fancy cars and which party they can not wear underpants to and if donald trump is trashing them on page six again. but you don't think about them staying in a branson style motel in modesto or driving to and from different movie sets or eating at the hole in the wall chinese place or just hanging out in a hospital like a normal person for weeks on end. i mean - with the exception of the occasional name drop or movie set mention or whatever - he was totally normal. sure - we don't all get personal emails from michelle kwan - but whatever...

and then there was the way you watched him discover how to be a dad and how he would talk about his son. there was just such love. it's amazing.

anyway - i enjoyed the book. pretty good. not a best seller or a book many have probably heard of. but i'd totally recommend it (unless your pretty conservative and have issues with the gay thing. it's not shoved down your throat or anything - but they are a gay couple and you just can't leave that out of the story).

up next - on "what is karen reading?" - Marie Antionette: The Journey by Antonia Fraiser. one chapter in and the historical who's related to who stuff made me really tired...

the mini houses....

okay - i SO knew that we hadn't seen the last of the little houses. they never explained the doll picture. there wasn't total closure. so it's obvious that the story isn't complete - even if that guy did confess....

and i can't believe that box is going to sit on grissom's desk for 4 stinking weeks. i hate suspense - don't they know that? obviously they do. or they wouldn't do it that way...

and why does the mini desk inside look like grissom's? that's not cool...

what is karen currently reading

today we start a new feature called "what is karen currently reading?"

not that i really expect any of you to care what i'm currently reading - but it's another insight into my goofy little brain.

so here goes. karen is currently reading "following foo: (the electronic adventures of the Chestnut Man) " by bd wong. the actor. from law and order. and oz. and father of the bride. who i met a month or so ago.

my coworker gave me this tree for christmas today. she has these dots on her office wall and there's a yellow one that i've told her needs a happy face. she won't let me put one on there though. then i told her about my friend rob and how i used to draw them on his shoes and how we hunt out cards full of happy faces for each others birthdays....

latest million dollar money making idea...

this one is way better than the heated gas station...

it's a brain wave conductor that you put on your head at night. it attaches to a small ipod like device that records transcripts of all those crazy thoughts and wonderful ideas and drafts of letters and work related things that seem to interupt your thoughts as you're trying to fall asleep at night so that you don't lose them when you wake up. in the morning - you just attach the ipod thingie to your computer and download your transcripts and viola! you'll work way more effectively...

it will also have feature to activate that will allow it to turn off once you fall asleep - because who really wants a transcript of their dreams? especially if you have wacky dreams all the time like me....

i call it - the ibrainrecorder. cause you have to have i in front of the name for it to be a success.

i plan to follow it up with a model that will program someone to do all of your chores when you think of them. like laying in bed and you remember that you forgot to take the clothes out of the washer. it will send a message to someone else so that they have to do it right away so it doesn't get forgotten...

i really think i'm on to something...

Tuesday, December 05, 2006

cause it's been awhile...

i know i'm down here in the basement and i'm supposed to be workin on my epiphany campaign stuff and all - but i have to get this out of my system...

ICKY CHRISTOPHER HAYDEN - YOU ARE GOING DOWN!!!!

i think we'll put up our tree....

i so totally think i should try to replicate this for a decoration for our house...

anyone know how i can make it last forever to make it an effective part of my collection??

chris and amy's wedding...

for those of you who know chris and amy - here are pictures from their wedding this past weekend...

Tuesday, November 28, 2006

back to the grind...

tuesday morning and i'm back at work...

we had a nice time in kc for the wedding (pictures will be coming). the hotel was crawling with cheerleaders because the regional competition was in town. the hair alone was scary. and conversations you never want to hear in the starbucks line include the words "do you wear underwear under your spankies?" 2 of them crashed the wedding reception too.

black friday shopping went great. i got everything that i went for. including a used pink nintendo ds lite for nina. picked up the hannah montana game and a mario gameboy advance game to test it to make sure it works. and it does. as a matter of fact - i'm on level 3 in hannah montana. :D

happy birthday to my daddy. he's 59 today - not that he'd admit it. i think they ran away to north carolina this week on purpose so we couldn't acknowledge his birthday...

i'm just not ready for this...

nina is going to be nine in less than a month.

she says she wants a bra. all the other girls have them. even the loner. except for the bully. the bully doesn't have one. but the cool girl has one. having a bra will make her cool too, she says.

she really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really wants a bra. please please please.

please.

and yet her christmas list also includes barbies, brats, and american girl stuff. and a bra.

i really wasn't expecting this fight for another year. bras don't make you cool. trust me. i'm not cool. i've been wearing one since i was 11.

i told her if she could ask santa for a bra when we went to see him and he brought her one - she could wear it.

funny. she still believes in santa. but she wants a bra. seems like it really wasn't too long ago that santa brought her pull ups cause she was ready to use the potty. i'm not sure santa's ready to send her the puperty message....

filming at du bourg??

i found out that a major motion picture has been being filmed in bishop du bourg high school. david eckstein's wife is in it. it's called alice. stars luke perry. and should be released in march.

and they have been filming at du bourg? why du bourg?? what's so special about du bourg???

it's hardly movie appropriate....

oh computer geek friends?

can someone explain the difference between the nintendo ds, the gameboy advance, and the gameboy micro? i'm so confused....

oh writers of gilmore girls???

what in the h - e - double hockey sticks do you think you are doing?? loralie and icky christopher are NOT supposed to get married and live happily ever after. he's an ex. exes are exes for a reason people! has my life history of men taught you NOTHING?

and i can't BELIEVE she would get married without rory there. that's just so wrong. i don't care if it was paris with lights and eiffel towers and bad accents and comfy beds and croissants. no daughter. no wedding. it's a life rule or something!

if this causes another mother/daughter rift - i'm gonna be super not happy.

and lane pregnant with twins? i have a really bad feeling about her pregnancy. like she's going to have a miscarriage or something...

bailey loves cheezits

total insanity

nina's school has cancelled school on friday because the cardinals won the world series.

now i'm as happy as the next gal - but THAT just seems a bit over the top!!!

Friday, October 27, 2006

and THAT'S a winner...

the first world series i ever remember was in 1985 - the I-70 series between the cardinals and the royals. i was in the third grade and my teacher was the biggest cardinals fan. she taught us all the words and every morning we would stand outside of school and sing "the heat is on" to the rest of the school. we mad construction paper cardinal hats. when the series teams were final - we had a whole school day without any real work. it was nothing but cardinals crafts and seek and finds.

we lost that series. i remember that it was a bummer.

nina's in the third grade. she was aware of the series for the first time this year. today they had a free dress down day for cardinals spirit and she wore her pujols shirt. and she stayed up with me tonite to watch the ninth inning and the cardinals win the series.

it sure turned out better for her.

THAT'S A WINNER FOLKS! GO CRAZY!!

ps. what was that nonsense i read a couple months ago about "the curse of the old bush stadium standing in our way of a world series win?" guess we stomped on that curse real quick!

exciting news...

I just wanted to share this with you all. Bob, my brother-in-law who has spent the last 9 months or so in Iraq, stepped foot on American soil yesterday and arrived safely in California!

We're glad he's back safe - his unit lost 4 soldiers in hostile attacks this summer.

He expects to be back to Wisconsin by Tuesday.

In the meantime, his first order of business was going shopping for some clothes to last until he got home - since all he has is desert cami's....

He didn't say it - but I'm sure his second order of business was finding a really good meal.

Tuesday, October 03, 2006

dear new writers of gillmore girls...

if loralei ends up with icky christopher and not with luke who we all KNOW she belongs with - i will be giving up all hope and belief that i have had since a child in "true love" and "happily ever after"...

you wouldn't want to do that to someone would you? i'm fragile. i might just crack....

is it me?

What do you think?? Be honest now...

update

the woman who lives next to the home where the guy was busted last week thinks that it was drug related but really doesn't know much.

i also found out that both she and the lazyass neighbor took in the dog that bit me in the last 2 weeks when it was out roaming around....

the sad adventures of a gummy bear...

so i was walking back to my building after lunch and i couldn't help but notice this sad little gummy bear laying on the ground all by his lonesome. i kinda wondered how he got there. i mean - he was in a BIG bag with his gummy siblings. then he was moved to a smaller bag with a portion of his gummy siblings. and then the bag moved around a few times. then the next thing he knows he's chucked to the ground where his fate is to be squished by a dirty flip flop on the foot of student too busy shuffling his or her ipod to notice the poor little bear laying there all helpless and stuff...

poor guy. i can only assume he met this particular fate because he was orange. and orange is always the worst flavor of any of the colored flavors....

dear writers of csi...

please stop tormenting the cast! i can't handle the added stress!

first nick.
then brass.
now catherine??

someone stop the insanity!

ps - kristine - the first few seasons of gilmore girls are out on dvd. however. on monday - abc family will start showing sindicated episodes at 6 pm. you can just watch then. just don't know if they will continue from where they are today or start from the beginning. it's been on at 4 until now...

Thursday, September 28, 2006

i so had it right...

and people wonder why i'm afraid of the dentist...

breaking news re lazyass neighbor!

when we got home yesterday - the lazy ass neighbor was talking to 2 detectives. there were 3 plain clothes police officers roaming about too. we couldn't figure out what was going on.

according to our neighbor next door - after we left, the guy living with them who we all assume to be their son, came home, was blocked in at the end of the street in the culdesac, and arrested. they put him in the back of the unmarked car for awhile. then uniformed cops showed up and they put him in a marked car before taking him away.

we have NO CLUE what's going on. we suspect the older lady who lives next to them knows something. kurt (the guy nextdoor) is going to try to stop by and talk to her and see if he can get any info...

stay tuned!!

Tuesday, September 26, 2006

who am i??

i know i know. my blog has been totally lame lately. no new posts. no rants about neighbors. no tv updates. i've been busy - okay? a girl has to earn a living. and unfortunately my job requires that i earn it a LOT between mid august and late october. heck - i turned in 9.5 hours of overtime yesterday.

anyway - we've just been super busy. i had to work late last night. baseball tickets tonight. prebowling tomorrow night. cheetah girls on sunday - lord help me.

but look at the brite side. gillmore girls starts back up tonight and i'm sure i'll have something to complain about there. once i get to watch it - since i'll be at the ball game and all.

i haven't forgot all of you. i promise. i've just faded into a busy existence.

i'll leave you with this. during the weekend of june 23 and 24 - i will be heading to charlotte north carolina to compete in the 2007 USBC Women's Bowling Championships. feel free to insert your joke here....

Tuesday, September 12, 2006

good news...

this week's lesson...

having a soft heart for animals can end badly. some dogs don't want to go home. some dog owners don't deserve to be dog owners.

and animal control has yet to do anything about it and it happened on THURSDAY!

i'm not foaming at the mouth yet - that's a good sign....

Third Grade - Day 5

and nina's home with a temperature of 102 and a massive headache...

playing mommy

i know that i've been missing in action this past week. nina started school on monday and has had half days every day until today...

3rd grade.

i really think it makes them more argumentative. we had a 2 hour disagreement on monday over book covers. she wanted the cool stretchy ones that cost money. i wanted her to use the free ones that come with my groceries. i won. it's cool to be the mom...

late last nite we got a call from one of the other moms looking for information on how to get cheetah girl tickets. which means nina had them first. nina's on the cutting edge for once. the envy of her friends. since that never happens - we think it's super cool....

:-D

i'm so lame - i'm pretty sure this post is about me...

virtual props to the person who can identify my costume for trivia night last weekend! that's erin - my coworker. i publicly humiliate myself for very few people - so she better feel honored!

Thursday, August 10, 2006

dear ameren ue,

i would like to take this moment to publicly apologise for any comments that have been posted in my blog during the past month which may have seemed slightly derogatory. i'd also like to apologise for my inability to properly spell derogatory - in case i spelled it wrong.

any comments made have been made out of constant frustration for our interuption of power and the potential of constantly having to restock our refridgerator and freezer.

i understand the latest outage that occured between 1 pm and 5:30 pm today was officially due to "wire damage". although we did find it interesting that it was no longer raining when the power went out this time.

so consider this a public apology.

karen

ps. now that i've publicly apologised and taken it all back - will you PLEASE stop turing off our power? i'm tired of resetting the clocks already!! and i missed gilmore girls again today...

Wednesday, August 09, 2006

now - i mean it. this ISN'T funny!

who did we piss off at the electric company? i'm serious. what did we do? we pay our bill. we don't complain about ourtragous prices. we don't even criticize over that whole dam break thing out at johnson shut ins last year...

this just isn't amusing anymore!!!

sitting in my living room around 4:30. minding my own business. watching the gilmore girls. i love the gilmore girls. and it's actually an episode i've never seen - which is about as rare as a 90210 episode that i haven't seen. it was the first one with sebastian bach. and sookie having her first baby. and the town doing living statues of works of art like the last supper with kirk as jesus...

sorry - i babbled...

anyway. so i'm watching gilmore girls. i start to order pizza. jeff goes in the bathroom to take his shower. it's raining out. a little thunder. nothing bad. no wind. not even raining super hard.

the power goes. right in the middle of my pizza order. then comes back. then goes. then comes back. then goes again. out for 20 minutes. wasting no time - i call ameren - they say it will be back on by 11 pm. yeah. it comes back. it threatens to go back out several times. jeff takes his shower. the pizza gets here. we start to eat. the power goes out again. out for another 45 or so minutes before coming back. we waited at least an hour before we started resetting clocks this time - just to make sure it was staying on...

ameren's webpage reports tree contact as the reason...

i just think someone there doesn't like me and is following me around and flipping major switches. i know it seems crazy - but how else do you explain a power outage in HANNIBAL??? and a week after we got our power back it went off for about 5 minutes in the middle of the night - totally randomly. so my theory can't be THAT far off. i mean - we've lost power 4 times in the last 3 weeks!!

and why don't they like me? i'm a fun girl?!?!?!?

vacation - day 2

jeff and i spent last night in the biggest 4 room suite at harrahs. six head shower, jaccuzzi tub, 4 tvs - including one by the jacuzzi tub, bose radio system, two potties, king size bed...

i'll spare you most of the details.

i had lobster for dinner though. and chocolate martinis. martini's and lobster totally rock.

the slots weren't as cool though. neither was the video poker...

nina didn't join us.

however - she found her cheetah girls tickets this morning and all i've heard since we picked her up is cheetah and hannah from montana. it's driving me bonkers and the concert isn't until october 1!

blog change

i made a change that forces you all to do a word verification step when you comment in hopes that who ever keeps spamming my blog will knock it off...

sorry for the inconvience...

it's so not funny...

jeff and i are out on vacation this week. staying at the lovely casa de meyer for most of it. doing some st. louis stuff and hangin by the casa's pool if we can.

yesterday we drove up to hannibal and did all of the typical hannibal things. the cave, house, and riverboat. we stayed the nite at a hotel - the quality inn and suites. hung out there last night watching a movie on our portable dvd player that we hooked to the tv.

about 11 storms started rolling through hannibal.

around 2 am - the hotel lost power. it was out until around 3 or so. so not long. but just long enough for us to think that the joke wasn't funny...

movie review: the devil wears prada

i went to see the devil wears prada with a friend from work friday nite.  it's been awhile since i've seen a movie without talking animals or animation.  it was kinda weird.

anyway.  you all know i was a big fan of the book the devil wears prada.  i just finished the author's second effort - everyone worth knowing.  equally good (except i really could do with less references to eating disorders and open prescription drug abuse).

as for the movie.  i still enjoyed it.  the ending was somewhat altered which bugged me a little.  it still worked and all.  but i like the book ending better.

meryl streep was wonderful.
anne hathaway was wonderful.
stanley tucci was EXCELLENT.
and man - the guy who played nate has a gorgeous set of eyes.

i don't recommend seeing the movie at a theater attached to a mall.  you leave with serious shoe and clothing envy.  and it kinda makes you want to shop.  and be skinny.  and be rich.  cause the clothes in the movie only look good on skinny people.  that cute little chanel dress would only look frumpy on me.

did anyone else know that the theater at the galleria serves beer???

sharing the cuteness

i just can't take it. recently i was directed to this webpage that collects cute little pictures of animals in a blog like format. i spent probably 2 hours looking at them one day. now i'm checking it almost dayly for more cute pictures. it's insane. i just can't help it!

so i have to share the cuteness. i direct you now to cute overload. you've been warned.

suri watch - day 100

i've figured it out. i know why we haven't seen suri cruise.

she's quite obviously the reincarnation of l. ron hubbard and must be protected and hidden from sight until after she's produced the next chapter in the scientology doctrine!!!

i think i'm on to something here...

i'd like to edit in a disclaimer here that i'm only being silly and there's no reason for tom cruise or anyone else associated with scientology to sue me. they wouldn't get much. but if they would like to try - my blog is produced by a gal named jane smith....

Tuesday, July 25, 2006

oh yeah...

i meant to tell you all...

she's parked in front of our house again. i'm counting the days...

UPDATE!

it was a false alarm - she moved it before we got home from work...

holy idol batman! it's kelly clarkson!!

last nite i went to the kelly clarkson concert out at riverport. and it's still riverport. i don't care if the sign does say umb bank pavilion. anywho.

i went to the kelly clarkson concert. it's been about a million years since i went to a concert. i'm getting mighty old for it as i am a zombie today.

i'm happy to say that kelly clarkson is just as good live as she is on the radio or tv. often you go to a concert and they suck live. kelly didn't suck. she sounded good. and she bounces around a lot. i don't know how she does it and doesn't collapse at the end of the night.

we sat in the harrah's star box which was pretty cool. we had vip parking and vip bracelets. and people waiting on us - which would have been super cool if we didn't have to pay for it. but whatever. there were 18 rows between our seats and the stage. i'm far too old to be sitting on the lawn anymore. i like to be able to actually SEE that who they say is on the stage is on the stage.

i've heard some things lately about people saying that kelly is getting chubby - well she looked fine to me. sure. she's got a little belly. and a bootie. but it's healthy curves. she looked healthy.

her hair is brown again. and cut kinda shorter. it looked good. way better than as a blonde.

she didn't sing either of the 2 songs that she had to record as a result of winning on idol. and she didn't mention idol at all either. maybe she is trying to distance herself from the show but i think it's smart. ruben and fantasia pretty much tanked in their career - even if fantasia does have a movie coming out on lifetime on her life. by distancing herself she's trying to stay afloat as a REAL artist and not some girl that won a reality tv contest.

there were so many little girls there! and teeny boppers. my favorite was the group of girls crowding around the kelly clarkson banner tied to the fence. you could practically narrate the conversation from afar. "oohoohooh! let's crowd around the banner and take our picture with kelly! crowd in closer. with kelly in the middle. it will look like we met her. maybe no one will notice that her head is 3 times bigger than ours."

it was cute when the 10 year olds did it. but after a group of 16 year olds did the same thing at the next banner down - it was kinda lame.

kelly sang 2 songs out in the crowd. the last 2. did all of break away from the center of the seats. and then started since you been gone there and went through the aisles as she sang before finishing on the stage. she walked down the steps 2 boxes away - so i was maybe within 30 feet of her. which was still pretty cool.

nina was pretty mad that i didn't take her. but we brought her home a t-shirt which once again secured my status as best mom ever...

a quest for POWER

wednesday evening i began a 72 hour quest.

a quest....

for POWER.

this quest involved several challenges.

challenge number 1 - keep the cool air INSIDE your house for as long as possible.  we managed about 24 hours in the beginning.  about 24 in the end.  the 24 in the middle were shaky.
challenge number 2 - make it to work on time with only one battery operated alarm clock in the house.  i was a half hour early on friday - i had nothing better to do.
challenge number 3 - find unspoiled food to treat an episode of low blood sugar.  girl scout cookies never go bad and refreeze well.
challenge number 4 - keep animals from over heating.  i caught sandy hanging out under our bed on the hard wood floor.  rolen's kennel is in the basement.  bailey's not the smartest cat in the world.  i have no clue where she was hanging out.  i usually found her on the chair though...
challenge number 5 - survive a night in the basement on an air mattress in the same room as your dog in his kennel.  i didn't sleep - but i survived.  and i only almost flew off the air mattress when jeff rolled over once.
challenge number 6 - survive eating an icky mr. z's frozen pizza at my mom's house for dinner cause it's free and she has power.  remind me not to order those from the next fund raiser - that was a toughie.
challenge number 7 - survive 3 nights without a baseball game.  not hard for me - but jeff almost needed life support.
challenge number 8 - survive the false hope of seeing the ameren webpage say you have power for 5 minutes before refreshing to say "oops - we were wrong."
challenge number 9 - survive 24 hours of seeing that your neighbors across the street have lights, air conditioning, tv's, and stoves while you still have nothing but the dwindling power of a mini mag light.
challenge number 10 - calling ameren ue and actually getting a person on the telephone to tell them that while the online webpage says we have power - you just left there and everyone has power but your block only to later find out that they thought you had power too and left the area.  i do believe some neighbors owe me some cookies cause otherwise we'd still be sitting in the dark.

after 72 hours of struggling to defeat the evil villain named "ameren" - we were triumphant in our quest.  we had found the power.  it was being hidden by something called "tree contact".  the first thing we did - after turning on several light switches and going to the bathroom with light better than a candle - was flick on the baseball game...

where we were really glad to find that we weren't required to play the games sequel - the quest for cable....

enjoy your lights people!  you don't realize how much you miss it until you hit the same switch about 83 times only to feel like an idiot cause you know full well that it won't work - that's why you have the flashlight in your hands dummy!

ick! paris hilton!!

i refuse to admit that this paris hilton song is any good or that i actually enjoy it a little.  you can't make me admit that...

things that make me go hmmm...

a local woman has filed a lawsuit against coke claiming that their latest "contest" is unsafe. her take on it is that if you drank enough coke (even diet coke) to accumulate the points to win the prizes it advertises - it would kill you because your kidneys can't handle drinking 30 or something cokes a day.

i've met julia once at the hooked on health show - she seemed pretty nice. her before and after pictures are amazing. and she was mrs. missouri.

while i think the whole lawsuit thing might be a bit extreme - she does kinda have a point - doesn't she???

please give me back my morning show...

so as if having steve and dc on for 5 hours every morning wasn't bad enough - 101.1 the river recaps that day's show every evening at about 7 ish. i discovered this one the hard way.

and right now we are in the middle of a 53 hour radiothon for the make a wish foundation. i had to change the station on my desk at work. i couldn't take it.

anyway - i actually listened to a segment the other night. i was trapped in the shower and didn't have much of a choice.

the entire segment was about how steve doesn't know how to play rock, paper, scissors and them explaining the concept and rules to him and then trying to play the game - over the radio. total waste of airspace if you ask me. total waste. another 20 naked minutes of my life i can't get back to add to the ones i spent with someone's sperm donor.

and at the same time i find it hard to believe a guys such as steve is so UNFAMILIAR with games involving his hands....

poor puppy

poor little roley poley has an external ear infection.  we had to take him to the vet yesterday where the mean old doctor held him down and used cotton balls to wipe about 10 pounds worth of icky goo out of his poor little ear.  poor guy whined and cried and stomped his foot begging to be left alone.  then the vet dropped some healthy goo back down in his ear to make it better.

then rolen went to the car and proceeded to shake his head violently until all of the healthy ear goo was all over the inside of jeff's windows....

tonight - i get to try and repeat the procedure without vet assistance.  fun fun fun.

this week's new feature - karen's confessions...

this week i'm going to start a new feature called "karen's confessions".  this feature is where i will humiliate myself by confessing a deep, dark secret of mine that none of you ever knew - and will probably wish you never did....

last weekend - i wasted 2 hours on a really bad made for tv lifetime type movie that chronicled the life of suzanne sommers and even though i knew it was really bad after about 10 minutes of it - i just couldn't help myself and kept watching until the end...

have a safe and happy holiday!

tomorrow is the 4th of july. a happy little holiday that celebrates the independence of our nation.

as you all know - my family has been professional pyrotechnics for sunset fireworks for as long as i can remember. maybe even longer. i don't remember a single july 4th where i watched fireworks shot by someone who wasn't my father - except maybe for that one year that we got tornadoed out in bellville and the mayor gave us free dairy queen...

and the ONE YEAR we went to lost valley lake instead when nina was 6 months old...

it's impossible for me to watch a finale rack without holding my breath. i don't watch fireworks without worrying. that's my family holding those flares. that's my daddy who walks along side the finale rack and stops to relight it when it stops. i don't think that i enjoy the 4th the way that most normal people do. the "romantic" and "cool explosive" part of fireworks are lost on me.

anyway, this will probably be the 10th or so year that we've done a show for a fancy country club in ladue. i doubt anyone will notice that one of the crew this year is missing because he has been deployed to iraq. isn't that ironic? while these people sip their wine and beer and eat their cheese and celebrating their freedom - one of their usual entertainers is deployed to iraq and they won't even realize it.

i can't help but acknowledge the irony.

anyway - everyone have a safe holiday. leave the fireworks to the professional crazies like my family. don't drink and drive. be responsible.

and be safe bob.

NEWS FLASH!

last nite before we left for dinner - she moved her car!!!  we saw her do it!  so jeff moved his truck into that spot so that she couldn't park there when she returned....

she still didn't park in front of her house.  she parked in front of our neighbor's house/car - which honestly is a good 4 houses away from her own house.  i don't know what aversion issues she has with parking in front of her own house.  but it's getting downright silly....

we'll see where her car is when we get home today.  if it's back in front of my house - i'm walking across the street...

Wednesday, June 28, 2006

dear lazyass neighbor...

as of 8:00 am this morning - you were still parked in front of my house.

i'm not playing.

and the guy next door is willing to back me up on this.

*giggle*  and yes - i did have jeff's mom park in front of your house last night while we were at the fox on purpose.

Monday, June 26, 2006

dear lazzyass neighbor,

as you know, we live on a very small, culdesac street.  space is limited.  parking is very limited.  especially when you consider that most home owners have 2 cars that have to be parked some place when we are actually occupying our homes and property.

i'm not sure what personal crisis is going on in your family - but i'm sure there must be some since i've noticed that 2 of your children, their spouses, and their 3 small children have all moved into your house.  i've also noticed that this increase in home dwellers has increased the number of cars at your house from 2 to 4.  i understand that the cars must all be parked someplace.  and i've appreciated the times that you're children have parked their cars on the side street.

however, your car has been parked in front of my home for a week now.  it makes it extremely difficult to unload groceries and furniture into my home when i have to park three houses away.  in front of someone else's house.  which is not convenient for them.

we have two cars and only room to park one in our garage at the moment.  we would really like to be able to park in front of our own house.  i don't think it's too much to ask.  you park in front of your house.  so do your kids.  i'm sure you appreciate the convenience of it - as would we - if we could do it....

you have until friday to move your car.  then i'm gonna get really crabby...

honey - we're killing the kids...

tlc has this new show called "honey - we're killing the kids." the show's concept is to take two parents of a set of over weight, lazy, spoiled children, and show them an animated age progression of what the children will look like as they grow from the current age up to the age of 40. the family then spends the next 3 weeks working out of a binder of rules to change their lifestyles for the better. at the end of the show, the parents are shown NEW age progressions that show how much better the children will be as adults if they continue down the path that they've started in the past 3 weeks.

each week the family is given 3 "rules" to follow - which are really more like goals. they are about the same for each family. i think it's so they don't have to print up new little magnet things for the rules.

i've watched a few episodes of this show and made a few observations that i want to share.

1. how do they really know that having a life of pizza eating and coke drinking will lead the child to pierce her nose and dye her hair green at the age of 18? and how do they know that eating tofu burgers will lead them toward a life without holes in body parts and normal hair styles? And a goatee verses no goatee??

2. isn't it a little hypocritical for a TV SHOW to tell a family that they each have to limit their tv watching to 1 hour a day? each family gets this rule and then there's a big spectacle about taking the kids tvs out of their rooms where they cry and fight and act like their 2. how is the show supposed to get ratings and succeed if people only watch tv for 1 hour a day? adults everywhere might use that 1 hour to get the weather forecast and news updates and then the show would fail! it doesn't seem like it's a very productive method of making your show succeed.

3. each family has a "get moving" type of rule where they send the kids out to some sort of activity/class for a week to make them want to exercise. they sent a 200 pound 12 year old boy and his overweight 8 year old brother to boxing lessons. the bigger boy hated it - with the exception of the fact that he liked to repeatedly hit stuff. like the bag. so - let's look at this in a logical way for a second. you sent a 200 pound 12 year old adolescent boy to boxing where he could learn to enjoy pounding things and the proper techniques to beat up people - such as his little brother and other peers who made fun of him. you gave him the ammunition he needed to become a bully. yeah - THAT'S smart...

4. they always send the parents out on a special date to a nice place for dinner. and i always wonder - where are the kids?? cause they usually aren't old enough to be watching themselves. and how come the places they eat are healthy but if i go out to eat it's impossible to find a meal that has less than 1000 calories?

5. it's a jump to expect ANY person to switch from meat to tofu after less than a week. and meat can be good for you in proper quantities you know. and just introducing a child to a pig farm isn't really going to deter them from eating bacon. i mean if they really like bacon - they're going to wanna eat bacon. meeting wilbur in person isn't going to stop that...

6. there's always that one child that refuses to eat the new food until 2 weeks into the program. how exactly is the child surviving in the meantime if they are sitting there refusing to eat the food at all meals?

7. why is it that plain, flavorless, bland oatmeal is the only healthy breakfast that they know? mix a little jelly in there - it tastes better.

8. vegetarian does not equal a healthier lifestyle. one can be healthy without tofu and bland foods...

someone pass the pork steaks please!

she didn't look good. and the clumb of mascara on the eyelashes of her right eye were really bugging me....

hershey warning

i found a note on the inside of my hershey bar wrapper today that said "candy is a treat.  please consume in moderation."  it was just below the fine print instructions on how to enter my code to earn 2 ebay points.  odd place to put it.

i have a strong temptation to go by OTHER hershey bars to examine them for the same warning...

i'm adding it to the list right after "don't use curling iron while sleeping".

cough hack hack cough

the doctor said i have an "upper respiroatory tract infection." i've been coughing virtually non stop for over a week. i had nail spiked golf balls hanging out in my throat. and it recently went to my ears and tried to infect there.

i don't like being sick.

i have had a few hits off an old prescription of cough syrup with codine though. it still works. codine gives me super powers. it also makes me itch constantly at invisiable itchy spots all over my body. but it stops the coughing.

some day that bottle's gonna be empty and i'm gonna be in a heap of trouble since no over the counter medicine works on me...

this week on "why you won't be my next american idol"...

we celebrate - katherine mcphee. katherine - you won't be my next american idol because you give REAL girl nextdoor types - like me - a bad name. what with your perfect hair and flawless complexion and little pouty kitten lips. middle america just can't give the title to someone from LA anyway and the women of the world want an idol that WE can drool over for a change!!

um. except the alternative isn't really "drooling material"...

anyway - that means - congratulations TAYLOR HICKS - you ARE the next american idol!!! even if i still think you look like my friend rob...

until next season - this is karen seacrest - one last time - out.

things that make you say ow...

i hate how effortlessly she can do this....

Friday, May 19, 2006

dear writers of csi

could we have just one season finale where we aren't totally stressed out about someone in the show only to get our happy ending at the end.  i mean - i know it ends the way we want and all.

but last year nickie - this year brass.  i can't take any more close to death calls with tthe cast!!!

oh - grissom and sarah - not a shocker - that's a long time coming.

if it were grissom and katherine - that would be a shocker...

this week on "why you won't be my next american idol"...

we celebrate elliott yamin. elliott - you won't be my next american idol because i just flat out don't like you. you look like a goat. you sound like a goat. and you have a really unflattering haircut. oh. and you totally butchered a journey song. i hold steve perry in the highest esteem - so butchering a journey song is an unforgivable sin in my book...

i must have voted for katherine 50 times over 2 hours last nite just because i don't think you deserve to be in the final two - especially with chris gone.

so as ET would say...

"gooooooood byyyyyeee ellllllliiiiiooooott."

until next week - karen. out.

this week on "why you won't be my next american idol"...

this week on "why you won't be my next american idol" we celebrate chris daughtry. chris - you won't be my next american idol because YOU WERE ROBBED! someone please call security right away becuase there is just no way that elliot should be in the top three and you shouldn't!

just NO WAY!!!

but since it's my job to insert a witty comment here - you won't be my next american idol because i don't like your s shaped sideburns and admitting that you once had ryan seacrest hair hurt your rocker style image.

personally - i'm starting an anti elliot campaign....

until next week. karen. POUT!

stupid season finale...

i'm officially mad at the end of the season shows now. i only cared about two or three this year. and so far 2 of them have totally sucked.

7th heaven

the series finale of 7th heaven was highly disappointing.  i hope i get better resolution from gilmore girls tonite...

this week on "why you won't be my next american idol"...

*yawn*

welcome to "why you won't be my next american idol"...

karen seacrest had a late nite at the ritz last night and is running a liiiiittle bit slowly today.

this week we celebrate paris bennett. paris, you won't be my next american idol because i just don't want my daughter looking up to someone who does the "beyonce butt" dance and says "thank yew" in a minnie mouse voice 10 times after each song. it's a creepy combination.

i know that's kinda lame and uncreative and stuff - but i'm tired, okay?
